Equivalent salaries in commonly compared countries
These gross salaries aim to preserve the same annual take-home pay under each country’s reference employee profile. Market rates use official exchange-rate data; purchasing power uses World Bank household-consumption price levels. Unavailable means the required official conversion data is missing or too old, so no figure is invented.

How Portugal income tax works
The calculator applies the published tax bands to income after the supported deductions. Each band applies only to the portion inside it. These bands use the taxable income base.
This reference uses a statutory tariff formula within each zone. A formula can use a base charge and a rate on excess income, or a progressive polynomial. The calculator evaluates the versioned formula and statutory rounding; the bands below identify formula zones.

Additional schedules: Additional solidarity tax. These are calculated separately and included in the tax total. Component-specific credits are applied only to their own tax schedule.
The displayed tax total covers IRS before optional credits. See the country assumptions for details.
Calculation assumptions
Mainland Portuguese resident ordinary private-sector employee aged 18-64, without disability, IRS Jovem or expatriate relief. This estimate is before household expense and dependant credits.
Individual and joint assessment are supported. Joint assessment combines both entered salaries and applies the statutory two-person quotient.
Annual gross includes all salary and holiday/Christmas payments. Only annual income entry is supported. Monthly net is an average over twelve calendar months.
Standard social-security rates are 11% employee and 23.75% employer. Gross must be at least EUR50,000, so employee mandatory contributions exceed the standard specific deduction; those contributions replace that deduction, rather than being added to it.
IRS is estimated before optional expense credits and municipality participation rebates. No unentered household credits or municipal reimbursement are assumed.
The statutory lower-band average rate and marginal excess rate from Article 68 are used. Additional solidarity tax applies above EUR80,000 taxable income.
Mainland employee reference only, with annual household gross EUR50,000-300,000. Independent professional verification pending.
Individual and joint assessment are supported. Other social-security schemes, Madeira, Azores, IRS Jovem, NHR and disability scenarios are not yet included.
Tax and cash net are before dependant, household-expense and municipality credits. This is not the final assessed refund or amount due.
Annual estimate, not Portuguese monthly withholding or the amount of each of fourteen pay packets.
