How Germany income tax works

Progressive tax applies to income after the supported deductions and personal allowance. Each band taxes only the portion inside it. These bands use the taxable income base.

Standard employee and special-expenses lump sums: EUR 1266. The result includes the actual allowed amount and the marginal effect of tapering.

This reference uses a statutory tariff formula within each zone. A formula can use a base charge and a rate on excess income, or a progressive polynomial. The calculator evaluates the versioned formula and statutory rounding; the bands below identify formula zones.

Calculation assumptions

  • Annual final-income-tax estimate for a single, childless German resident aged 23-64, not liable to church tax, outside Saxony.
  • Ordinary statutory pension, unemployment, health and care insurance; health supplementary contribution is specifically assumed to be 2.9% (not a claim about every insurer).
  • At least EUR25,000 of full-year ordinary salary; no mini/midi-job, special occupation, other income or tax-class withholding adjustments.
  • Employee pension contributions are deductible; statutory health contributions are reduced by 4% for tax deductibility; childless care contributions are deductible.
  • Standard employee expenses EUR1,230 plus special-expenses lump sum EUR36; no higher expenses, refunds, donations or family allowances.
  • The statutory annual tariff rounds taxable income and tariff tax down to whole euros. Solidarity surcharge uses the single-person 2026 exemption and phase-in.
  • This is an annual assessment estimate, not a reproduction of monthly German wage-tax withholding. Marginal rate is the primary tariff rate before solidarity surcharge and social contributions.
