How United Kingdom income tax works
Progressive tax applies to income after the supported deductions and personal allowance. Each band taxes only the portion inside it. These bands use the taxable income base; the initial table is for England.
Personal Allowance: GBP 12570. It reduces by 50% of adjusted income above GBP 100000. The result includes the actual allowed amount and the marginal effect of tapering.
| Taxable annual income | Rate |
|---|---|
| GBP 0 - 37,700 | 20% |
| GBP 37,700 - 125,140 | 40% |
| GBP 125,140 - and above | 45% |
Supported tax residences: England, Wales, Northern Ireland, Scotland. The calculator applies the selected residence’s income-tax bands.
Social contributions
The listed contributions are additional to the main tax schedule. This reference table is for England; the calculation result includes contributions for your actual selection. Some countries include national-insurance premiums in that schedule; see the country assumptions to avoid double counting. Employer payments do not reduce employee take-home pay. Contribution thresholds and rounding use the period specified by the rule.
| Contribution | Rate / bands | Assessment |
|---|---|---|
| Employee National Insurance · category A | 0% from 0; 8% from 1048; 2% from 4189 | Monthly |
| Employer National Insurance · category A | 15% | Monthly; threshold GBP 417 |
Deductions & supported scenarios
Supported payments: Net pay pension. Tax deductibility and actual cash payments are tracked separately. Enter only the payment arrangements described in the questions and country limitations.
Where an optimisation scenario is supported, the engine recalculates tax and shows the trade-off in spendable income. Absence of a suggestion does not establish that no other legal relief exists.
